Need help answering these questions…?
The church and religion is the "Crucible" for the characters convicted of witchcraft in the story. The church condemns these people and puts them under so much pressure (much like the heat from a chemical crucible) until they admit to their impurities and become "pure" in the hands of the lord. The title depicts that point of the story is to try and burn the IMPURITIES out of the community. Ironically, another symbol that involves the crucible is that the CHURCH is the crucible bringing the impurities out of the people, but a crucible burns to extremely hot temperatures which relates much more to HELL than it does to Heaven. Arthur Miller is making a statement about the Puritan church being closer to bad than good.
